Two men claim in a federal lawsuit filed Friday that Pittsburgh police Sgt. William Kunz and six other officers conspired to cover up a road rage incident by Officer Garrett Brown, who is awaiting trial.

Blaine Johnston, 59, of Carnegie and Matthew Mazzie, age and address unknown, say Kunz and the other officers conferred with Brown and then filed false charges against Johnston so that Brown could avoid internal discipline and civil and criminal liability for his actions in the Nov. 18, 2010 incident and file a false insurance claim.

The two men are suing the city, Brown, Kunz and the other officers who are only partially identified in the lawsuit.

Brown is scheduled to stand trial on March 4 on charges of filing a false claim, making a false report, theft and two counts of reckless endangerment, according to Common Pleas court records.

City solicitor Dan Regan said he couldn't comment on the case.
