Quaker Valley School District will no longer send students to the Alternative Center for Education at Parkway West Career and Technology Center beginning next school year.

The school board made the decision Tuesday night.

Since 2009-10, the center's enrollment has declined from 78 students to 44 – resulting in a higher cost per student. Tuition for the half-day program is more than $17,000 per student, a Quaker Valley spokeswoman said. This year five Quaker Valley students are attending the program, three of whom will complete it by the close of the current school year.

Superintendent Joseph Clapper said the decision had nothing to do with the quality of the program.

“However, in these challenging economic times we can no longer justify exorbitant tuition costs for a half-day instructional program when there are other high quality, cost-effective options,” he said in a prepared statement.

The center serves seriously and persistently disruptive students in grades 6-12.
