Freezing rain and sleet caused havoc for Monday morning commuters on roadways throughout Western Pennsylvania before warmer temperatures seeped into the region.

The National Weather Service forecast a 40 percent chance of rain on Tuesday with a high temperature in the 50s. Meteorologist Tom Green said the temperature is expected to climb to near 58 degrees on Wednesday before dipping back to 30 degrees on Thursday with a 30 percent chance of snow.

The ice- and slush-covered roads caused a number of automobile accidents.

The weather prompted some businesses and school districts, including West Mifflin Area, Gateway, Greensburg Salem and Washington, to operate on delayed schedules.

The Armstrong School District and others closed for the day.

State police in Butler County responded to reports of vehicles sliding off icy roads, mostly on Interstate 79, Trooper Theresa Maker said.
