The South Highland Avenue Bridge linking Shadyside and East Liberty will close March 4 for replacement and remain closed until year's end, the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works announced on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh and the state Department of Transportation are sharing costs of the $3.5 million project, according to city officials. The bridge crosses Ellsworth Avenue and the Martin Luther King Jr. Busway.

The new design, which incorporates bridge supports dating to 1875, is designed to improve clearance over Ellsworth Avenue and provide more of a vista for pedestrians and vehicles.
