Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday introduced legislation that would ban smoking on city playgrounds.

Councilman Ricky Burgess sponsored the bill which would require Parks and Recreation Director Michael Radley to post signs in the playgrounds designating them as smoke-free zones. It also would require Radley to notify residents in writing of the ban.

Burgess' office said children exposed to second-hand smoke are susceptible to respiratory illness and are more likely to view smoking as acceptable behavior when they see adults lighting up in public places.
