State Sen. Wayne Fontana joined the growing list of potential candidates for Pittsburgh mayor.

Fontana, 62, D-Brookline, said Tuesday his decision to run will hinge on how much political support he can gather. His supporters are circulating petitions required for his name to appear on May 21 primary election ballots.

“Being a city resident and having represented parts of the city for the last 12, 13 years, I certainly think I know the issues and problems that exist,” said Fontana, who represents the 42nd District and previously served on Allegheny County Council.

Sen. Jim Ferlo of Highland Park, City Council President Darlene Harris of Summer Hill and former state Auditor General Jack Wagner of Beechview this week joined City Controller Michael Lamb of Mt. Washington and Councilman Bill Peduto of Point Breeze in vying to replace Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who dropped out of the race Friday. Candidates must gather petitions with at least 250 signatures of registered voters living in the city and file them with the county election office by March 12.
