A bomb threat prompted a search of Peters Township Middle School on Friday morning, but police found nothing and the school was declared safe, a school district spokeswoman said.

Students and staff left the building about 10:30 a.m. after a bomb threat was found in the school said spokeswoman Shelly Belcher, who declined to provide more details.

Police finished a first search of the school at about 11:15 a.m., and then a second search with dogs was done as a precaution, Belcher said. The second search concluded at about 12:45 p.m. The school is located on East McMurray Road.

About 700 seventh- and eighth-graders, went to the multipurpose room of McMurray Elementary School across the street during the search.

The school district notified parents that they could pick up their middle-school children if they chose, and most of the children were picked up, Belcher said.

The rest returned to the middle school until dismissal at the end of the day, Belcher said.
