Washington police are trying to determine what prompted a man to fatally shoot his friend before killing himself early Thursday.

Lt. Dan Stanek said Nathan Roman, 30, and Michael Marchines, 31, both of Washington, were friends for years.

“I'm not sure why it would lead up to an actual shooting,” Stanek said.

Roman and Marchines may have argued after leaving Hungry Jose's on South Main Street, Stanek said. A third friend who left before them turned around and saw that Roman had been shot, Stanek said. He and others called 911 about 2:25 a.m.

Doctors at Washington Hospital pronounced Roman dead from bullet wounds to the chest and abdomen at 3:30 a.m., Coroner Tim Warco said.

Police began tracking Marchines' cellphone and found him lying on the sidewalk at South Main and South streets, Stanek said. He died from a self-inflicted shot to the head, Warco said.

“At this point we're assuming that one shot the other,” Stanek said, adding that police would review surveillance video. “We're still trying to talk to people there that night.”
