A fire on Friday destroyed an unoccupied farmhouse in a heavily wooded section of Ross, authorities said.

The two-alarm fire was reported shortly before 11 a.m. in the 100 block of Milbert Lane. It ignited surrounding brush and spread toward a nearby gas well, according to a 911 supervisor.

Ross Fire Marshal John Reubi said firefighters had to run nearly 3,000 feet of hose up a narrow dirt road from hydrants on Rochester Road. About 50 firefighters from 10 companies responded, he said. No injuries were reported.

The two-story wood and stone home and an adjacent garage and shed were destroyed, Reubi said.

“The power was off and nobody was living in the house at the time, but people were getting it ready so they could move in soon,” Reubi said.

Once the fire was under control, crews sprayed foam on the rubble to prevent it from reigniting.

An investigator from the Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
