Driver nabbed in high-speed chase in Lincoln-Lemington; search on for passengers

An East Liberty man led police on a high-speed chase early Friday through a part of the East End before officers arrested him in the woods behind Lemington Church.

Police charged Scott Donofrio, 24, with driving under the influence; fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer; driving with a suspended license; and several traffic violations.

They are searching for his passengers.

Pittsburgh police Detective Daniel Sullivan said he was responding to a 911 call about two men fighting in the street at the intersection of Lincoln and Frankstown avenues in Lincoln-Lemington about 3:30 a.m., when he saw a man walking away from a black Chevrolet Cavalier.

“There were no other vehicles or pedestrians at the intersection, and I concluded that the vehicle was probably involved in the fight,” Sullivan wrote in a criminal complaint.

Sullivan said he pulled the vehicle over at Lincoln Avenue and Mayflower Street and exited his police cruiser. The car then accelerated through a stop sign and a red light, reaching speeds of 70 mph in a 25-mph residential area.

The car sideswiped a Jeep Cherokee and came to a stop when it struck another vehicle, Sullivan said.

Donofrio exited the Cavalier and fled on foot into a wooded area; the car's passengers ran in the opposite direction.

Sullivan said he saw what appeared to be a silver-colored pistol in Donofrio's hand as he and other officers pursued him behind Lemington Church on Lincoln Avenue. Police caught Donofrio and took him into custody about 4 a.m.

Sullivan said Donofrio smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, glassy eyes; he also was slurring his words. Police administered a breath test and determined he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.086 percent, slightly over the legal limit.
