South Side man arrested, charged with beating and raping woman

A South Side man was arrested Wednesday on charges of beating and raping a woman who had gone to stay with him because she had no place else to go.

David L. Baynes, 47, who court papers say has a previous conviction on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, also was charged with failure to comply with registration of sexual offender requirements.

The woman told police she went to Baynes' apartment on Monday after being kicked out of a three-quarters house for testing positive for drug use. She said she resisted his repeated sexual advances but that after he prevented her from leaving on Tuesday, he beat her repeatedly beat her before raping her. She said she managed to escape Tuesday night by saying she had to use the bathroom in the hallway but instead running down the stairs and going to a nearby tavern to call police.
