Police are investigating the death of a person whose body was discovered in a burning vehicle in the parking lot of a Ligonier Township tavern around noon on Tuesday.

Township police Chief Michael Matrunics said police are unsure if the victim found in the driver's seat was the person who owned the vehicle that was destroyed by flames. It is believed to be a male.

Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Sean Hribal said the death is suspicious. An autopsy will be conducted at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

A passing motorist called 911 upon spotting the burning car in the rear parking lot of the Washington Furnace tavern east of Laughlintown.

Volunteer firefighters from Waterford, Wilpen and Ligonier Borough were extinguishing the fire when they discovered the body, Matrunics said.

It is believed the destroyed vehicle was a silver 2005 Hyundai Tucson.

It is unclear how the fire started, Matrunics said. A state police fire marshal, county detectives and an evidence team from state police collected evidence at the scene.
