Man rescued from Monongahela River near Station Square

A man was pulled from the Monongahela River on Friday night near the Smithfield Street Bridge and Station Square.

Police, paramedics and city River Rescue personnel were called at 10:12 p.m. for the report of a man in the water, screaming for help with people trying to keep his head above water.

He was conscious and alert when pulled from the water at 10:23 p.m., county emergency dispatchers were told. He was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital for treatment.

Emergency personnel have not said how he got into the water, who was helping him and who pulled him to safety.

Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said she was waiting to receive a report about the incident.
