A shopkeeper died and a possible witness was injured in a shooting during an apparent robbery Sunday evening in Sheraden, Pittsburgh police said.

The dead man, identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office as Darryl Terry, 50, was the owner of Allendale Market on Allendale Street, where police were called about 7:30, according to city public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler. Investigators found signs of a struggle inside the store and said Terry ran outside, where he was shot at least once in the head.

“The dude doing the shooting was standing on the sidewalk as Darryl ran across the street,” said neighbor James Rak. “Then, he ran up to him and shot him as he was on the ground.”

A woman who apparently witnessed the shooting and called 911 also was shot, Toler said. Police found her in a car with her dog nearby, and paramedics took her to Allegheny General Hospital, North Side, in critical condition.

Police searched several houses up the street but found no suspect, Toler said. No arrests were made.

Authorities did not release the second victim's name.

Troy Askew, a worker at the store, and building co-owner Ashley Sloan said Terry opened the store about a month ago.

“I had just spoken to him,” Sloan said. “I'm shocked. ... This street, period, is one of the safest streets in the neighborhood.”
