Man hit by train beneath West End Bridge

A train struck and critically injured a man beneath the West End Bridge near West Carson Street on Sunday evening, authorities said.

Pittsburgh police, fire and EMS were called to the tracks under the bridge about 5:10 p.m., according to Allegheny County 911 supervisors.

Police Cmdr. Scott Schubert said the victim, 18, might have been fishing by the bridge when a person in a car dropped off a bag of chicken for him. As the victim was walking back toward the riverfront, he paused by the tracks and bent over as a train was approaching, blowing its horn. Part of the train struck the victim and knocked him about 30 feet, Schubert said.

The person who dropped off the food took the victim to Allegheny General Hospital, North Side, where he was alive but in critical condition, Schubert said. Homicide detectives are investigating.
