Background: Oesterreich came to United States in 1992 to work in breast cancer research, first at the University of Texas Health Science Center and then at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 2010, she and Lee, also a cancer researcher, were recruited by the University of Pittsburgh to start a women's cancer research center at Magee-Womens Research Institute in Oakland.
