Region under wind advisory; fallen tree blamed for RMU outage

High wind caused a power outage at Robert Morris University and felled trees throughout Fayette County, officials said Monday.
A fallen tree caused a campus-wide power outage about noon at Robert Morris University's Moon campus.
A wind gust of 49 mph was recorded at 12:25 p.m. at Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay and a 46 mph gust was reported around 1:40 p.m. at the Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin, the National Weather Service in Moon said. The highest gust as of 4 p.m. was a 53 mph blast in Peters.
The NWS issued a wind advisory until 3 a.m. Tuesday for much of Western Pennsylvania and until 9 a.m. in mountain ridges to the east and southeast. Forecasters expect steady wind of 20 mph to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph for much of the area through 7 p.m.
Robert Morris canceled afternoon and evening classes because of the power outage, spokesman Jonathan Potts said. Power was restored about 4:30 p.m.
About 6:15 p.m., high winds reportedly knocked down wires at Pittsburgh and Butler streets in Springdale, creating traffic problems.
In Fayette County, the county Emergency Management Agency reported a number of trees down and advised motorists to watch for debris across some roads.
Besides downed trees and power lines, the NWS warns that gusts could pose problems for empty tractor-trailers and other high-profile vehicles.
