Lightning strikes Monroeville house

| Wednesday, May 7, 2014, 8:45 a.m.

A lightning strike damaged a home in Monroeville on Wednesday morning.

The strike was reported at 8:16 a.m. at a home on Jamison Lane, a Monroeville emergency dispatcher said.

Firefighters were investigating whether the lightning bolt hit a tree near the house, traveled through the roots to a wire fence and down the fence to the house, where a window and bricks were blown out.

Jason Sonafelt, president and captain at Monroeville Fire Co. No. 1, said it is not necessarily rare for a lightning strike to continue traveling after hitting a tree.

“It just all depends on the scenario itself,” Sonafelt said. “It hasn't happened much here.”

Investigators on Wednesday afternoon were still trying to determine precisely where the lightning bolt struck.
