Route 66 between Manor and Bethel was closed for several hours Monday morning when a tractor-trailer hauling 41,000 pounds of stainless steel coil overturned at a bend near Huston Road.

Walter Rouse, 50, of Apollo, who was driving the M & A Transport truck, was uninjured in the crash that occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. The road was closed until about 2:30 p.m. while crews worked to right the truck and clear the accident site.

“I've never had any accidents before,” he said after crawling out of the overturned truck unassisted. His chihuahua, Petie, who had been along for the ride, was also unharmed.

“I believe he was going too fast around the turn,” said state police Trooper Brian Shaffer, adding that the truck's load was not properly secured. “He had more than enough chains, but didn't use a J-hook. Once the load shifted, it dragged him over.”

Manor and Ford Cliff fire departments sopped up a diesel fuel spill from the road as crews used pulleys and chains to pull the truck upright.

“There was less than 10 gallons spilled, and the fire departments were able to contain it,” said Vince Cappo, Armstrong County HAZMAT coordinator.
