Dunbar supervisors on Thursday voted on a single hauler for the township's garbage collection after considering bids from two different companies.

Supervisor Ron Keller made the motion for the township to enter into a contract with Veolia Environmental Services with curb-side collection at $11.99 per month and door-side service at $16.99 per month.

“We know the prices, and Veolia is lower in residential and curb-side,” Keller said.

The other company, Waste Management, would have charged $12.60 a month for curb-side and $17.60 per month for door-side service.

Before the supervisors unanimously voted for the motion, questions were raised by residents attending the meeting.

One question was whether residents who already have garbage service need to switch to Veolia.

As long as either the resident or the garbage company present proof, such as a canceled check or a billing statement, they won't need to go to another garbage company.

Supervisors also assured residents that the set price will not go up for three years, which is the term of the contract with a two-year option, and there will still be a spring and fall cleanup day.

While many questions were answered, a few residents were upset that a senior-citizen discount was not included in the garbage contract.

The new single hauler for the township will go into effect on Nov. 1.

In other business, Ken Martray, project engineer with Widmer Engineering, informed supervisors that Phase 2 of the Dunbar Borough/Township Sanitary Authority public sewage project will take place around Oct. 15. Pipe will be laid along Route 119 between Hutches bar and Oglevee Lane, as well as on Oglevee Lane.

During the two-week project, Martray said Oglevee Lane will be closed with the exception of buses, and contractors will work with residents there to accommodate them while the lines are installed.

Martray said tap-ins to the system could begin in March or April.

Supervisors also:

• Announced that trick-or-treat in the township will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 28. Residents who want to participate are asked to turn on their outside lights.

• Voted to continue burning days every Wednesday and Saturday until November.

• Announced that Chevron is repairing damages by milling the edges of the roadways along Ridge Boulevard, Duck Pond Road and Pershing Drive, as well as single seal coating along Little Summit Road and Airway Road.

• Announced that K2 Engineering will take over the federally mandated building inspections from Fayette County. Anyone needing an application or has questions can call K2 Engineering at 724-439-3440 or contact the supervisors at 724-628-1440.

• Voted to have the township solicitor write up a job description and advertise for a secretary position.
