Southmoreland board to vote on closing administration building

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, 12:01 a.m.

Southmoreland School District administrators will vote on the closing of the administration building at its meeting next Thursday.

The board briefly discussed the proposed closing at its planning meeting Thursday.

If directors approve the closing, the school district will relocate employees who work in the building at 609 Parker Ave. in Scottdale to other facilities in the district, said Superintendent John Molnar.

Solicitor David Petonic said he will have more details on the sale process at the board's next voting meeting on Feb. 14, but that a public sale would require sealed bids and a private sale would have to be handled by the Westmoreland County Court of Common Pleas.

Any equipment or supplies being stored at the administration building would be disbursed throughout other buildings in the district, Molnar said.

Director Catherine Fike asked the board to work quickly in its decisions about the close and sale of the building so the district does not incur any extra insurance costs.

The building might continue to be used for storage until any sale is finalized so that it is not considered completely vacant, Molnar said.

In other business, three schools were presented with Keystone Achievement Awards for achieving adequate yearly progress on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests.

Principals from Southmoreland Primary Center, Southmoreland Elementary School and Southmoreland Middle School accepted the blue-and-gold signs that represent achievement for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.
