Burrell Township approves new name for private road leading to proposed business
A private road that formerly served as a driveway to the Cornell farm will now be known as Sunnyside Lane, after Burrell Township supervisors approved the name change at their regular meeting April 17.
Township residents Charles and Phyllis Kendall own the property and plan to open a yogurt shop in one of the buildings on the former farm. The Kendalls told the board that a house they plan to rent on the property shares the same address as the future business.
Phyllis Kendall said she called the Indiana County Emergency Management Agency and was told if there are more than two buildings on the property, a new road name must be assigned for 911 address purposes — unless there is a second access point on the property.
The road extends off Cornell Road near the intersection with Corporate Campus Drive.
The proposed name change will be sent for final approval by the county EMA, which will ensure that the name does not conflict with other 911 addresses in the area.
After taking a break due to winter weather, the Blairsville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses will continue work on building a new church off Newport Road in Burrell Township.
The supervisors received a letter from the project site engineer notifying the township that the congregation has filed for water quality permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection. The permits are needed to move forward with construction of a 4,300-square-foot church, 800-square-foot carport, 400-square-foot shed, and 27,000-square-foot parking lot, along with associated utilities and stormwater management facilities.
The supervisors also received a request from the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development asking for the supervisors to identify a list of priority projects for the township as part of the newly adopted Indiana County Comprehensive Plan, which includes short-, mid- and long-term projects for county municipalities.
In the past, local municipalities and officials were asked to identify specific projects for possible use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. With the new comprehensive plan, in addition to CDBG projects, the planning office will also be soliciting projects that may be funded through other federal, state and local sources such as county liquid fuels, Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PennVEST), Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) planning funds, and Marcellus shale impact fees.
The township has until Wednesday to submit its potential projects.
In other business, township supervisors:
• Received the Black Lick Volunteer Fire Company Relief Association's compliance audit report from the state Department of the Auditor General.
• Approved the following road closings for parking during a pistol bash planned for 1-9 p.m. June 8 by the Black Lick Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary: Park Drive from Grant to Willow streets, and Grant Street from Main Street to Park Drive.
• Announced that the fire department will hold a sub sale May 4 and a basket raffle and Chinese auction June 2.
• Reported that spring clean-up dates have been set for 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.
The township office will be closed May 3 for the annual county convention. Bid opening for road materials will be held at 1 p.m. May 8. The next township meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 15.
