'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

A state police fire marshal is investigating an early Monday fire at an abandoned Indiana County home.

Saltsburg Fire Chief John Dice said there was no operating heat or electricity at the Wood Street residence. The fire may have started in the basement, he said.

Firefighters responded to the home at 2:50 a.m. Monday and found heavy smoke and a “fully-involved first floor,” Dice said. There was significant interior damage to the story-and-a-half structure, but the brick exterior is sound, he said.

No one was inside and there were no injuries.
