Derry Township contributed its annual share to Westmoreland County's public transportation.

At Tuesday's meeting, supervisors approved the Local Share Assessment Agreement with Westmoreland County Transit Authority for the fiscal year.

The township will pay $848 for its annual share through June 30.

In another matter, Chairman Vince DeCario announced the township will collect leaves from residents on Oct. 26, Nov. 1 and Nov. 9.

Leaves must be bagged and left on the curb for township workers to pick up, he said.

Residents should call the township building with their addresses if they want the leaves collected, DeCario said.

The dates are put in place because the township is required by the state Department of Environmental Protection to provide recycling because of its population, he said.

“Remember, what that means is you're not allowed to burn leaves in Derry Township,” DeCario said. It also helps cut down on smoke and smell that could bother neighbors, he said.

“You want to sit outside in the fall and somebody's burning leaves and it stinks,” DeCario said.

Discussions are under way about mandatory garbage pickup in the township, but a decision may take a few months, he said.

“It's just a matter of sitting down and making a decision,” he said.

Garbage bills in the township are about $65 to $70. If supervisors make a decision, DeCario said he hopes it will benefit the residents.

“We want to help the residents with the cost, that's the main thing,” he said.

Supervisors noted that Norfolk Southern will close Burd's Crossing at Valley Street on the next two Mondays to reopen the following afternoon both days.

They announced that Halloween trick-or-treating will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 throughout the township.
