Suspected Hempfield drunk driver parks in state police lot

Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, 12:01 a.m.

A Hempfield man was charged with driving under the influence when he was discovered parked in a restricted lot at the state police barracks.

Gary Christopher Santillo, 44, was also charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest by state police after the incident at the North Westmoreland Avenue barracks.

State Trooper Adam Thomas said that about 10 p.m. Saturday several troopers noticed Santillo's 2001 Toyota Solara, with two occupants, parked and running in a spot reserved for the barracks' “crime lieutenant.”

Thomas said when troopers approached the car to investigate, Santillo became combative.

At that point, the troopers noticed Santillo was “severely intoxicated,” and unable to stand or speak coherently, according to court records.

When troopers took him into custody, they asked him to submit to a breath test, which he refused, records show.

Santillo's passenger, Valerie Marie Casper, 42, also of Hempfield, was mailed a citation for criminal trespass.

Hearings will be scheduled before Hempfield District Judge James N. Falcon.
