A motorcycle driver died after crashing into a car in West Newton Monday afternoon, and a passenger was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition, West Newton police said.
Nobody in the car was injured, West Newton police Sgt. Anthony Gillingham said. Police on Monday night did not release the names of those involved.
The motorcycle was westbound on East Main Street around 5:40 p.m. At a sharp right curve, it traveled across the eastbound lane and struck a car, then traveled about 85 feet down a steep embankment, Gillingham said.
Both the driver and passenger were thrown from the bike, police said. They were wearing helmets, according to police.
East Main Street was closed for more than three hours while crews responded.

We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive commentary for a general readership. By screening submissions, we provide a space where readers can share intelligent and informed commentary that enhances the quality of our news and information.
