Rough landing: Only the cost-conscious (ahem) Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission would charge a pilot $3,000 for making an emergency landing in August on the Mon-Fayette Expressway, which saved the life of the pilot and his passenger. Brian Nicholson managed to bring the single-engine airplane down safely on the highway, without damaging the road, signs or motorists, when a piece of the plane's propeller broke off. The commission says what's being charged is merely common practice. Obviously consideration of extenuating circumstances is outside the commission's bailiwick.

The right vote: Ligonier's council had good reason to reconsider the Ligonier Valley YMCA's rezoning request, which it approved last week. The alternative would be a court battle it could not win. At issue was inclusion of the “no” vote from former councilwoman Kim Shaffer when the council originally rejected the Y's request. But it was Ms. Shaffer who sold land to the YMCA — land that became the linchpin for Y's expansion plans. That conflict is clear. The initial vote including Shaffer's participation was wrong from the get-go.

Score!: Congratulations to the Greensburg Central Catholic girls soccer team on its second consecutive PIAA Class A championship over Southern Columbia in Hershey. More than a credit to the players' talent, success on this scale takes determination and plenty of hard work.
