Educated on electric rates

With winter closing in, energy suppliers are hunting for new subscribers. Buyers beware, as IDT, First Energy, etc. want to get into your wallet.
There are big bucks to be made. They make the savings sound good, but they're not so forthcoming about contract life, variable rates and cancellation penalties of up to $150.
These alternate suppliers are not governed by the state Public Utility Commission and are not required to follow the same rules as, say, West Penn Power. Some are from outside Pennsylvania.
My five-month usage of 6,230 kilowatts cost $124 more with First Energy than it would have with West Penn Power. I realize those companies are related, but West Penn is my power company while First Energy is my electric provider.
