School & obesity
Regarding Jon Wehner's letter “Obesity overreach” (Oct. 2 and TribLIVE.com): Sending a child home from school with a letter telling her that she is 1 percent overweight may have been a bit cruel. Maybe the school should have approached the situation more tactfully, but it is trying to help her healthwise.
I'm sure that Mr. Wehner feels his stepdaughter is perfect the way she is (whatever that means), but if she is overweight, he and his family ought to get realistic and learn ways to help her lose her excess weight, as it is bad for her health. She may be beautiful but she is definitely not healthy by being overweight. They need to learn to eat right and exercise properly. Doesn't being obese help to shorten one's life?
Socially, people also tend to look down on overweight people. This could also affect her career later in life.
