I want to thank Congressmen Mike Doyle and Keith Rothfus and U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey for voting in favor of the recently passed “No Budget, No Pay” bill. The new law suspends congressional salaries in the event that Congress does not pass a budget by the start of the federal government's fiscal year and continues until a budget is approved.

The grassroots organization No Labels proposed this historic legislation, which seeks to increase the effectiveness of the federal government through a bipartisan focus on problem-solving and commonsense reforms. The law takes Congress one step closer to being able to effectively do the people's work.

In the past 60 years, a budget and requisite appropriations bill have been passed on time four times — that is unacceptable. With the leadership of No Labels and many practical Congress members, we're now closer to solving the problem.

I encourage all members of Congress to support a more comprehensive reform bill, H.R. 310 and S. 124. I likewise encourage any citizen who wants the government to work better to consider joining the movement at NoLabels.org.
