'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Regarding the news story “Ravenstahl: Pittsburgh sues to remove UPMC's tax-exempt status” (March 21 and TribLIVE.com): Thanks are due to Mayor Luke Ravenstahl for a pristine example of how big government works.

You select a successful group of people or an enterprise such as UPMC and designate it the bad guy.

You fire up an electorate that goes on emotion instead of reason regarding the unfairness of the bad guy.

You extort more taxes from the successful, diminishing them while feeding even bigger government.

And all the while, the uninformed, emotionally motivated, are totally oblivious to the fact that it is they who ultimately pay.

If they looked to reason, they would admit that they don't want to work for nothing. Well, no one else does, either.
