'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

NRA pawns

It seems that the Republican Party is very successful in alienating the majority of Americans.

The latest example is the statement by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, one of the most notorious tea partyers. He said President Obama used the Newtown parents as pawns in the gun debate.

Pawns? These people lost their children to a horrific act of gun violence. They had every right to go to Congress and plead their case for background checks.

In a display of greed, fear and cowardice, the majority of Republicans and four Democrat senators allowed themselves to be pushed around by the NRA and voted against background checks. They are the real pawns.
