'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

I've often wondered what is being done with the money I pay in Westmoreland County real estate taxes. Thanks to the Valley News Dispatch, I see that I bought $112 sunglasses for sheriff deputies. Maybe they'd like taxpayers to chip in for gold-plated dental floss as well.

Now, the Valley News should find out what frivolous items are in the New Kensington-Arnold School District's budget. The free press is charged with being the eyes and ears of the public. “We The People” are so busy working to pay our taxes, we can't possibly search out this information ourselves. We depend on the Valley News to report outrageous wasting of taxpayers' money.
