Letter to the Editor
Saturday, July 20, 2013, 9:00 p.m.

While attending the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, I got to wondering why it was necessary to have Pittsburgh police dressed in full battle gear, as though they were patrolling the streets of Kabul. Is this gear necessary to protect a bunch of yinzers on a hot, sunny day?

The image of the police, and perhaps their effectiveness, would be greatly enhanced if they were to dress normally, in short-sleeve shirts and shorts with ball caps, water bottles and radios.

Why not a less-combat-ready unit to work these kinds of community events? Surely, a more heavily armed backup team could be called upon if needed.
