'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Letter to the Editor

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder claims the American people are afraid to talk about race. Guess what, Eric, I'm not afraid.

Our biggest problem in this country is everything is about color. We are all Americans, but until we are all classified that way, we will remain divided.

You should never be asked what your race is. When applying for a job or anything else, you should be listed as an American. We should not have a Black History Month. Why not just History Month? No more black Miss America or black athlete of the year or black singer of the year. Our rules should be for everyone.

It seems everyone of every race or nationality can commit a race crime except blacks. Why?

President Obama has been on television twice complaining of a race crime. The first was in 2009 when he accused a white police officer of racially profiling a black professor; the other is in the Trayvon Martin case, in which George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man, shot Trayvon in self-defense.

Both the officer and Zimmerman were shown to have done nothing illegal. Obama should keep his mouth shut until the facts are in and our justice system has run its course. It seems he wants there to be race riots.

On television the other night, a black comedian was telling N-word jokes and everyone laughed. But what happens if someone of another race says the N-word? If the word is not to be used, it should apply to everyone.

Remember we are not black, white, yellow or green. We are Americans.
