Congratulations to the veterans of World War II who showed everyone around the country why they are members of the “Greatest Generation” and how they won the war (“Veterans bypass barriers to closed WWII memorial with lawmakers' help,” Oct. 1 and TribLIVE.com).

Their mission was to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and nothing was going to deter them.

With their determination, they reminded all that these memorials and buildings and this country belong to the American people — not the politicians.

So, raise your glasses high and salute all those, both living and deceased, with a toast: “To the Greatest Generation” — we will not see their kind anymore.
