Name, don't cut

The recent circumcision tragedy in Squirrel Hill ( “Squirrel Hill rabbi denies botching circumcision” ) should never have happened — a child has a fundamental right to his healthy, functional body parts.

Freedom of religion is an important part of our American identity. The imposition of an irreversible body alteration on a nonconsenting child violates his religious freedom, since he might choose to follow a different faith than his parents.

A better alternative is Brit Shalom , a naming ceremony without cutting.
