Baseball

Clinic

  • The University of Pittsburgh Diamond Baseball Clinics will be holding their Pitching and Hitting Academy in December. For more information, please call (412) 648-3825 or (412) 648-8238.

  • The University of Pittsburgh Baseball Program has announced their upcoming Christmas Clinics. The clinics will be held Dec. 28-30. All-Skills/Offense will be held from 9 to 12 and Pitching/Catching from 12:30 to 3:30. For more information contact 412-648-3825.

    Camps

  • There will be a Power Baseball Hitting Camp with Florida Marlins Scout David Rettig, Tampa Bay scout Scott Grinder and Independent Scouting Bureau General Manager Claudio Resilino for players ages 8-18 on Dec. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena in Harmerville, Pa.   • Point Park head baseball coach Al Liberi's "Like a Missile" holiday baseball camp will be held Dec. 27-29, 2002 at the Island Sports Center on Neville Island, Pa. Joining coach Liberi will be former Pittsburgh Pirates manager, Jim Leyland, Pitt-Greensburg head coach Joe Hill, Ryan Ellis of the Washington Wild Things and Don Kelly, a Mt. Lebanon, Pa. native and one of the top prospects in the Detroit Tigers organization. The camps run daily from 8-11 a.m. and the cost of the four-day event is $100 per person. There is an early bird discount of $90 per person if you register eight or more campers.   • The First Annual Plum Baseball Alumni Smoker will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Monroeville on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. Ken Macha, the manager of the Oakland Athletics, will be the featured speaker, along with former Cleveland Indians Pitcher Tom McGough and local college coaches. Proceeds benefit the Plum Varsity Baseball Florida Trip adn the Plum Baseball Boosters. Admission is $10.00. Food and beer is provided. BYOB.     Camp

    Winter Season

  • The Allegheny county Department of Public Works, Parks Division announces that the 2002-2003 Winter Golf Season at the North and South Park courses begins Dec. 1 and runs through March 10 weather permitting.     Underwater

  • Underwater Hockey has begun at Pine-Richland High School Pool on Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m. at the pool in Pine Township. The game is open to all ages and abilities and is played with a mask, snorkel and fins on the bottom of the deep end. Cost is $3 each night.     Mascot Skate

  • Citiparks 16th Annual Mascot Skate is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2003, from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. at the Schenley Ice Skating Rink. Pittsburghers of all ages are welcome to come to meet and greet over 35 of their favorite mascots at Pittsburgh's original Mascot Skate. Admission is $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for youth, 18 and under and seniors. Skate rental is $2.00 and skate sharpening is $3.00.   • The popular "Magic Moves" Skill Centers offered by PA West Soccer Association returns in January for U9 and U10 players looking for fun and a chance to develop their skills. The program is open to any registered player and offers top-level training. There are ten one-hour weekly sessions and the cost is only $60 per player. Sites include: Southpointe, Monroeville Sports Center, California University of Pa., Tri-County Soccer Center, Star Soccer Center, St. Francis College, and Super Y Zone in New Castle.   • Elizabeth Forward's Recreational swims will begin on Friday, January 3 at 7:00 at the Senior High swimming pool. Recreational swims will be held every Friday through April. Any swim can be cancelled by the school district because of unforseen circumstances. All participants are to use the back entrance of the school by the pool. Parking is available in the back.

  • PTR Certified Tennis pro Tom Fleming will hold junior clinics that consist of three skill levels and run for seven weeks according to the following schedule: Beginners: Mondays, 6-7 p.m., starting Dec. 9. Cost $59.50. Pre-intermediates: Saturdays 1-2:30 p.m., beginning Dec. 21. Cost: $89.25. Students must be able to rally at a slow pace. Intermediate/Advanced: Saturdays 2:30-4 p.m., starting Dec. 21. Cost: 89.25. Register now, advanced class is limited to 12 students. All participants must be YMCA members. Call Fleming at (412) 928-8241 for placement, or for private lessons.
