• Edinboro senior Kiara Brown (Ambridge) was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II All-America team, and senior Samantha Blazetic earned honorable mention honors. Gannon's Jen Papich (Fox Chapel) also was named to the honorable mention squad. Papich, the PSAC Western Division athlete of the year, and Gannon (31-5) fell to Ashland (Ohio), 74-63, in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on Wednesday.

• Slippery Rock hired former Buffalo Bills assistant coach Eric Thatcher as linebackers coach. Thatcher, who started for three years at Pitt, spent last year as the Bills' defensive quality control coach.

• Edinboro didn't look far when it came to replacing men's basketball coach Greg Walcavich, who held the job for 24 years. The Fighting Scots named Pat Cleary, who had been an assistant at Edinboro for 14 years.

• Mercyhurst senior forward Luis Leao was named to the NABC Division II All-America team.

Ben Cottreau, who played from 2004-08 at Mercyhurst, was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association's 10th anniversary second team. former teammate Jamie Hunt, who played from 2003-06, also made the second team.

• The Mercyhurst women's hockey team (29-7-1) closed its season with a 4-1 loss to Boston University in the NCAA semifinals. Senior forward Gina Buquet received the Elite 89 award, which honors the student-athlete with the highest GPA competing at the finals site in each NCAA sport. Buquet has a 3.94 GPA with an exercise science major.

• Penn State sophomore Matt Brown won the Elite 89 award for wrestling. Brown, who finished second at the NCAA Division I championships, has a 3.97 GPA with a crime, law and justice major.

TOP PERFORMERS

Pitt

• The women's gymnastics team claimed third place at the Eastern Area Gymnastics League championships. The Panthers were led by senior Alyssa Adrian, who won the all-around title (39.250) in just the third time she's competed in the event.

Penn State

• The Nittany Lions' fencing team claimed third place at the NCAA championships over the weekend in San Antonio. Eight fencers earned All-America status, including a pair of national runners-up: Shaul Gordon (men's saber) and David Willette (men's foil).

West Virginia

• Senior Mandie Nugent became the first female swimmer in school history to be named All-American with a seventh-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:55.61) at the NCAA Division I championships in Indianapolis.

Grove City

• Senior Angela Palumbo (Trinity) closed her college career by becoming the most-decorated athlete in school history. Palumbo earned All-American status in four events (100 freestyle and the 200, 400 and 800 relays) and honorable mention in two more at the NCAA Division III championships in Shenandoah, Texas. She has been named an All-American 12 times and collected nine honorable mentions in her four-year career.

Westminster

• Freshman Matt Baurle (Penn-Trafford) took eighth place in the 100 breaststroke in a school record time of 55.93 seconds to earn All-America status at the NCAA Division III swimming championships.

Penn State Behrend

• Sophomore Dan Simon (Penn-Trafford) set a school record while competing in the 100 freestyle (47.04) at the NCAA Division III national championships in Shenandoah, Texas. He also set a school record in the 100 backstroke (49.79).

Waynesburg

• Junior Jonathan Blatt broke the school record in the 5,000 meters (16.11.29) at the Amy Adams Memorial Invitational.
