St. Vincent baseball coach Mick Janosko earned his 300th career coaching victory with his team's 8-6 victory against Grove City last week. The Bearcats also won the second game of the doubleheader, 12-5.

“I'm humbled about it,” said Janosko, in his 15th season as coach. “The players deserve all the credit. They are the ones doing all the lifting.

“I look at it two ways, either you're bound to get it if you stick around long enough or over the years you have good quality people in the program, players willing to sacrifice for the benefit for the team and put the time in to get better.”

The Presidents Athletic Conference baseball tournament begins Thursday, and St. Vincent will play tournament host Washington & Jefferson (27-11) at 6 p.m.

The Bearcats (18-18) stumbled into the double-elimination tournament after losing a three-game series to Thiel (24-16).

Thiel will face Thomas More (27-12) at 3 p.m.

“We knew we weren't going to be as deep this year as in past years,” Janosko said. “We lost a lot of offense from last year. We're still looking for a fourth pitcher.”

Janosko has relied on the arms of Jared Haller, Gary Gerhardt and Joey Fearer.

Senior shortstop Brad Burkardt has been one of the most consistent players on the team. He recently collected his 200th career hit, a school record, and it was a home run.

Janosko said Fearer has been a surprise as a pitcher, third baseman Nick Beamenderfer has had a nice year and center fielder Vince Murphy has adjusted well to the conference.

Academic honor

Burkardt earned his second consecutive Capital One Academic All-District IV honors. The award was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Burkardt earned the spot on the first-team, which is made of NCAA Division III schools.

The Latrobe graduate has a school-record 200 hits in his career and is currently hitting .313 with 10 doubles, 21 runs scored and 18 RBI.

He is now on the national ballot and is eligible for Academic All-American honors.

Renewing rivalry

St. Vincent announced its 2013 football schedule and it is highlighted by a renewal of a rivalry with Carnegie Mellon University. The Bearcats will play host to the Tartans on Oct. 5 in a nonconference game.

Carnegie Mellon and Case Western are rejoining the Presidents' Athletic Conference in football for the 2014 season.

The home schedule features games against Westminster on Sept. 28, Washington & Jefferson on Oct. 26, Thomas More on Nov. 2 and Bethany on Nov. 16.

The Bearcats open the season Sept. 7 at Bridgewater College in Virginia.

Leading the way

Westmoreland County Community College freshman Max Shoemaker is having quite season. The 2012 Latrobe graduate has a 5-2 record with an earned run average of 4.79. He's also batting .368 with 16 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Latrobe grad Don DePalma has 10 RBI, including a bases-loaded double in a 6-5 victory against Lakeland Community College of Ohio.

Coming up short

Washington & Jefferson won the inaugural men's lacrosse championship with a 10-8 victory over St. Vincent on May 4.

The Bearcats reached the finals with a 24-1 win against Bethany.
