Pitt freshman Steven Adams led a dominant effort on the boards, and Tray Woodall shot 50 percent from the floor as the Panthers defeated Duquesne, 66-45, in the annual City Game on Wednesday at Consol Energy Center.

Woodall's 24 points led all scorers, and Adams set a career high with 14 rebounds in the win, Pitt's 12th in a row in the 81-year series. Lamar Patterson had 13 points and James Robinson had nine points and seven assists for the Panthers (8-1), who have won 31 of the last 34 meetings against Duquesne.

Sean Johnson led Duquesne (4-4) with 13 points and four rebounds. He was the only Dukes player to score in double figures.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon talked before the game about guarding against 3-pointers; Duquesne hit 12 from long range in a win over Maine on Saturday. The Panthers held the Dukes to 5 of 21 shooting and 31.6 percent overall from the floor.

“This was an important game for us and for them, and I'm real pleased with how we played,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “I thought we defended well and rebounded well.”

The Panthers outrebounded Duquesne, 49-33, and were sparked by Adams, who had 11 of his 14 rebounds in the first half.

“If you're going to beat Pitt, you have to outrebound them, and we certainly didn't do that,” Duquesne coach Jim Ferry said. “It's disappointing. When you have some guys on your team only getting one rebound, two rebounds, we needed a better effort.”

Pitt led, 29-17, at the half. Their lead fell to single digits just once, after Duquesne scored the opening basket of the second half. Duquesne used a 5-0 run to make it 41-30 with 12:45 to play, and Dixon called a timeout. The Panthers responded with two baskets; with 4:46 remaining, they led by 22.

The Panthers limited the Dukes to 24 percent shooting in the first half but didn't fare much better themselves, shooting 27 percent. Pitt shot 56 percent in the second half, however, and finished 24 of 62.

The game was tied, 15-15, with just more than eight minutes left in the first half.

Pitt went on a run and made it 21-15 — its largest lead to that point — with 41⁄2 minutes to play before Woodall hit a 3-pointer. Duquesne senior Andre Marhold made it 24-17, but Woodall hit another three and a pair of free throws.

“We like to feed the hot hand, and he definitely had it,” said Lamar Patterson of Woodall, who tied a career high with five 3-pointers.

Trey Zeigler, who was suspended indefinitely following a DUI charge Nov. 26, returned and played 14 minutes. He was 0 for 2 from the floor.
