Pitt received three more commitments Thursday from the Class of 2014 when Fox Chapel linebacker Quintin Wirginis, defensive tackle Mike Herndon of Staunton, Va., and defensive tackle Connor Dintino of Wallingford, Conn., told coaches they will enroll next year.

The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Herndon chose Pitt over Virginia Tech, which impressed his coach, Robert Casto, of Riverheads High.

“Choosing Pitt is pretty good in the state of Virginia, where most young men go to Virginia Tech,” Casto said.

Herndon, rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, starts at middle linebacker for Riverheads, but Casto doesn't expect the transition to be a problem.

“He plays middle linebacker, but he may be a stand-up nose guard or a defensive end or defensive tackle for us,” Casto said. “We move him around.”

Herndon, who is the Panthers' biggest defensive recruit, also had offers from Connecticut, James Madison, Old Dominion and Western Michigan.

Wirginis (6-2, 225) turned down a Temple offer to commit to Pitt. He plays outside linebacker, but Pitt coaches are planning to use him in the middle.

“I don't think it will be a problem,” Wirginis said.

Wirginis said he knows he has a lot of work to do but is confident he can handle it.

“I've been to a bunch of camps, and I've seen kids stronger than me and faster than me who are better football players, but I think I can be better than them,” he said.

Dintino, of Choate Rosemary Hall, is a three-star recruit and had offers from Buffalo, UConn, Holy Cross and Villanova.

Pitt has collected nine commitments from rising high school seniors in the past week, bringing the total to 10.
