Pitt football grabs 11th recruit for 2014

Shane Roy visited several colleges before he decided to commit to Pitt.

“It stuck out to me,” said Roy, a defensive end at Reading (Ohio) Community High School. “It was very unique. No other college can say they practice with a pro team.”

Roy, 6-foot-414, 235 pounds, became Pitt's 11th commitment from the Class of 2014 on Friday — and the 10th in seven days.

Before he begins to share a practice facility with the Steelers, Roy has some unfinished business at Reading, where he will be a four-year starter.

He is only six sacks shy of the school career record of 26.

He collected 1612 in 10 games last season — 112 off the single-season record at Reading — while playing defensive end in a 4-3 defense. Pitt plans to use him in a similar manner.

“He definitely gets after the passer well,” Reading coach Scott Thamann. “There were times we were upset he didn't have more.”

Reading plays in the third-smallest of Ohio's seven high school divisions.

Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, Roy had offers from 11 other schools, including Boston College, Bowling Green, Illinois, Kent State, Miami (Ohio) and Toledo.
