With only three quarterbacks in camp, Pitt coach Paul Chryst gave starter Tom Savage most of the day off Tuesday to ease the strain on his arm.

“Part of the preparation is getting enough reps and work, and part of it is making sure, physically, (players) are feeling the best they can,” Chryst said.

Senior wide receiver Devin Street said he understands the importance of preserving a quarterback's arm.

“That's their moneymaker,” he said. Street said he has been getting ample time to build an on-field relationship with Savage.

“If I have to (stop a route short), he knows I'm doing that. It's about getting in sync with each other. Tommy's doing a great job. It's totally different from last year.”

• Savage is the only player Chryst has designated to start, but freshman wide receiver Tyler Boyd is getting close to winning a job. “Tyler brings great maturity to us, great work ethic,” Chryst said.

• Street said he is amazed at Boyd's progress. “He is just a smart kid and he's hungry, too. He is definitely going to be an asset for our offense. You need the maturity level to be out there because you are going against grown men.”

• Chryst said no determination has been reached in the case of freshman quarterback Tra'von Chapman, who is under suspension after serving a three-day jail term for assaulting a former girlfriend. Chapman said he is waiting for Pitt officials to rule on his possible return to the university and the football team in time for the start of the semester Monday. Chapman said a decision could come this week. “I want to come back,” he said. Chapman said he works out every day while staying in the Pittsburgh area at the daughter's home of his high school coach, John Nemec.

• Senior wide receiver Ed Tinker had his left foot in a boot and did not practice in the morning session.

• Redshirt freshman center Gabe Roberts replaced sophomore Artie Rowell on the first team. Rowell spent the previous four days working with the first team.

• Cornerback Titus Howard and safeties Terrish Webb and Cullen Christian recorded interceptions in practice. The play of the day was a 65-yard completion from Chad Voytik to receiver Kevin Weatherspoon, who was well-covered by Howard and Lafayette Pitts.
