Pitt QB Savage expected to play vs. Virginia Tech

Pitt quarterback Tom Savage is recovering and is not expected to miss the next game Oct. 12 at Virginia Tech after getting hit in the head and showing concussion symptoms Saturday.

Pitt officials said in a statement that Savage “has shown only mild symptoms and continues to make progress on a daily basis.”

Savage, a fifth-year senior, didn't finish the 14-3 victory against Virginia on Saturday after getting hit by Cavaliers linebacker Daquan Romero at the end of a 14-yard scramble on the last play of the third quarter.

No penalty was called, and Romero stayed in the game. The NCAA instituted a rule this season stating hits to the head are grounds for ejection.

Savage finished that series and played another — taking eight snaps and getting sacked twice — and was experiencing concussion symptoms in the huddle, wide receiver Devin Street said.

“He wasn't OK,” Street said of Savage's demeanor after the hit. “He wanted to say he was OK, but he was gagging. He wanted to throw up. I think he got his bell rung, for sure.”

Savage, who is third in the ACC in passing yards per game (263), was pulled with 3:30 left and replaced by redshirt freshman Chad Voytik.

Note: The ACC announced the Pitt-Virginia Tech game will be televised on ESPNU at noon.
