Jaymar Parrish saw a lot in his first season on the University of Pittsburgh football team.

The 2013 Gateway graduate and true freshman with the Panthers didn't want the Panthers to finish the 2013 season with a losing record as they faced Mid-American Conference champion Bowling Green in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit.

In the end, Pitt got the win it was looking for, and it finished 7-6.

“It felt really good to get the win, and we wanted to send the seniors out right,” said Parrish, who also carried the ball once for two yards.”

“They did so much in their careers. Everything came together for us.”

Parrish, who started at tight end and played on the line and also in the backfield as an H-back/fullback threw several key blocks that sprung fellow true freshman James Conner to one of the best games for a Pitt running back in a bowl game.

Conner rushed 29 times for 229 yards in last week's victory over the Falcons. He scored one touchdown and averaged almost nine yards a carry.

“When I saw him break one for 20 yards or more, I know I and the others on offense were doing our jobs right and we had to keep on going,” Parrish said.

The Pitt seniors ended their careers on a positive note, and the win also boosted the returning players into the offseason.

Parrish and Conner join the likes of fellow true freshman Tyler Boyd, from Clairton, who finished with eight catches for 173 yards and a special teams touchdown on a punt return against the Falcons, and redshirt freshman quarterback Chad Vojtek as those who can produce a bright future for the Panthers.

Vojtek spelled injured starter Tom Savage in the second half of the Pizza Bowl and was 5 of 9 passing for 108 yards. He added two carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.

“There's a big difference in going 7-6 and going 6-7,” Parrish said.

“Everyone is ready to get back at it and get ready for 2014. Spring practice is not too far away.”
