Monessen QB commits to West Virginia
Chavas Rawlins wrote down questions about the schools recruiting him, from the program's proximity to the offensive benefits to the coaches' trustworthiness.
“I was going down the list, like any recruit would, and the best answers I was getting were from West Virginia,” Rawlins said. “I really, really liked West Virginia. I think I fit in perfect.”
The Monessen star from the Class of 2013 made a verbal commitment Friday to the Mountaineers, choosing them over Duke and Tennessee primarily because they promised the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder he could play his preferred position of quarterback.
Rawlins completed 68 of 153 passes for 991 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 599 yards and five scores on 97 carries out of the shotgun for the Greyhounds last fall. Rivals.com deems him a three-star recruit.
“If you look at their offense, it's tailor-made for his skills,” Monessen coach Andy Pacak said. “He's got a big arm and a great set of legs. If there's nothing there, he's pulling it down and can go. And then you've got a new set of problems.”
Rawlins had more than a dozen scholarship offers, including Pitt, Georgia Tech, Purdue and Virginia, but said some schools were recruiting him to play receiver or defensive back.
“Really, it came down to what I was interested in and which schools wanted me to play quarterback,” Rawlins said. “That's what I want to play. Most of them wanted me as a wide receiver or defensive back. Others already had a quarterback. It was easy to eliminate them.
“That's the point I think I have to prove. If Coach (David) Cutcliffe from Duke told me I could play quarterback, I think I can play anywhere. I mean, he coached the Mannings.”
Pacak was so impressed with the way Rawlins handled his college choice that he stayed out of the way.
“He stayed real focused on what was important to him when people came in,” Pacak said. “I was really proud of him. Most of the time, we weren't even needed. He had his own game plan and handled it like what he is — an adult.”
