For the third time in as many seasons, the Hampton Talbots opened the season with a new head coach. Long-time assistant Anthony Scolieri is now in charge, and he said his plan is to mesh his philosophies with those of the previous two regimes he was a part of.

“It was a privilege to coach with Brad Lloyd and Dan Sarasowski, and I will not be going way off of what we have done in the past,” Scolieri said. We have a good recipe of puck possession and trapping that create scoring chances for us.”

That recipe worked wonders in the first game of the season against Gateway. The Talbots dismantled Gateway 12-2, and in the return to Double A the team made a positive opening statement.

“This season, things will be a lot more of a team effort,” Scolieri said. “We have some very skilled guys who play well together. The puck movement against Gateway was incredible, the line combinations clicked and we played hard and disciplined. The players definitely bought in.”

Scolieri said the team is rather young aside from seven upperclassmen. Players like defensemen Andy Coyle (the team captain), forward Zach Kosick (two goals against Gateway and a player Scolieri said has great hands and an unbelievable shot) as well as Joe Vita, a big and powerful player. Sean Mcdermott is a kid who never quits according to his coach, and goalie Cam Raidna is one of the best in the business. “I think Cam is among the best goalies I have seen,” Scolieri said. “He is a fighter and a fundamentally sound goalie. He is very, very good.”

The jump to AA will be a challenge for the Talbots, as Scaolieri said there was no scouting previously done, so every first period is a feeling out process.

“We played Gateway 2-1 in the first period, then made some adjustments,” Scolieri said. “It makes a big difference.”
