Greensburg Central Catholic is heading toward a possible WPIAL playoff berth with a 48-0 win at Charleroi in an Interstate Conference tilt Friday night.

“They are picking it up and they are a good team,” Charleroi coach Ed Jenkins said. “But it was also the same story for us.

“Turnovers, pick-sixes, fumbled snaps. We can't do that and expect to win. We can't give away points.”

The Centurions (5-2, 4-2) got on the board two minutes into the contest on a 45-yard interception return by Zach Guiser and they never looked back.

Leading the way for GCC, which has now won five straight games, was quarterback Chuck Keller.

The junior signal caller completed nine-of-13 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns and raced 42 yards for another score.

The scoring strikes were 25- and 29-yard passes to Palmer Biros and a 10-yard pass to Tyler Balla.

“He looked really good tonight and was playing at a different level than we were,” Jenkins said. “We never did match him.”

The outcome was never in doubt as the Centurions raced to a 21-0 lead after one quarter and put the mercy rule into effect on the first drive of the second half.

Tyler Balla scored on a 54-yard touchdown and ran for 103 yards on eight carries for GCC.

Despite the loss, Jenkins saw some things that he said that Charleroi (1-6, 1-5) can build on.

“The kids gave maximum effort but we lack experience,” he said. “We have kids that have to learn to play the game. We make mistakes that seasoned teams don't make but the guys are trying.

“A part of it is our youth and part is our inexperience. But an Achilles heel of ours all year has been problems tackling and we have to get better at it.”

Charleroi heads to Southmoreland next week before hosting Brownsville on senior night in two weeks.

GAME NOTES: Eric Johnson led Charleroi with 35 yards rushing on seven carries … Johnson, Robert Lynn and Jim Diaz each had two receptions for the Cougars … Guiser added a two-yard score to go with his interception return … GCC had 11 first downs to Charleroi's six.
