High school roundup: Peters Township edges Bethel Park in PIAA first round

Olivia Roberson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to lift WPIAL champion Peters Township past Bethel Park, 3-2, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs at Chartiers Valley on Tuesday night.

Emily Franty scored for the Indians early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie before Roberson scored the game-winner 10 minutes later. Halle Hammer scored for Bethel Park (20-3) in the 73rd minute to make it a one-goal game, but it was not enough.

Peters Township (21-1) will play Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Seneca Valley 2, State College 0 — Alex Bilka scored in the first half and Morgan Williams added an insurance goal in the second to give Seneca Valley (20-2) a PIAA Class AAA first-round win at Central Mountain High School.

Moon 3, Forest Hills 0 — Taylor Dornin, Emily Rode and Christine Barthen all scored for the Tigers in their PIAA Class AA first-round win at Hollidaysburg High School. Moon (15-0) will play Trinity (District 3) on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Mars 5, Clearfield 0 — Sabrina Edwards had a hat trick and Lydia Dennis scored a pair in Mars' PIAA Class AA first-round victory at North Allegheny. Mars (20-1-1) will play Mercyhurst Prep in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Mercyhurst Prep 2, Belle Vernon 1 — The Leopards' rally from a 2-0 deficit fell short, as the third-place finishers in the WPIAL lost in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs to the District 10 champion at Fairview High School. Hayden Pascoe scored the lone goal for Belle Vernon (18-4-1).

Shady Side Academy 3, Fairview 0 — Maggie Scott scored a pair of goals and Calsey Holshue added one for Shady Side Academy in its first-round win in the PIAA Class A playoffs at Veterans' Stadium in Erie. Shady Side Academy (16-5-1) will play Sewickley Academy in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Sewickley Academy 1, Conemaugh Township 0 — Melina George scored the winning goal on a breakaway with 10 minutes left to lift Sewickley Academy (21-1-1) to a win in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs at Somerset High School.

Greensburg Central Catholic 7, Karns City 2 — Frannie Crouse scored four goals to lead the WPIAL champion Centurions to a PIAA Class A first-round victory at Hampton. Greensburg Central Catholic (20-1) will play York Catholic in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

Boys soccer

Sewickley Academy 2, Mercer 1 — J.P. Bowell scored with seven seconds left in the first half, and Erik Dietrich scored the game-winner two minutes into the second half as Sewickley Academy (19-1-1) won in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs at Franklin Middle School.

Girls volleyball

Mt. Lebanon 3, DuBois 0 — The Blue Devils swept District 9 champion DuBois, 25-11, 25-17, 25-16, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs at Chartiers Valley.

OLSH 3, Penns Manor 1 — OLSH won, 25-8, 25-18 and 25-18, to knock off District 6 champion Penns Manor in the PIAA Class A first round at Central Cambria High School.

Clarion 3, Bishop Canevin 0 — Clarion ended Bishop Canevin's season in the opening round of the PIAA tournament, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21, at Clarion University.
